We had to get a "halti" from the pet store for our very large dog.
The harness goes around the head and leads underneath the chin. For us it was the only thing that worked, even the kids could walk him while wearing it. hope this helps.

First, try a Halti, Gentle Leader or some other kind of head halter for control. This is so you can walk him until you get him trained.
You can also purchase a type of harness where the leash hooks onto the front of the chest and it inhibits the dog's ability to pull. One type is the Sense-ible Harness by Softtouchconcepts.com
Or the easy walker by Premier.

When you walk, if your dog pulls, stop moving and plant your feet. Your dog will eventually look at you, which puts slack into the leash. As soon as that happens, reward him by moving the direction he wanted to go.

Your dog will figure out he only gets to go places when he isn't pulling.

A gentle lead. It is a collar that fits around their nose and back of the head, behind the ears. It is like a horse lead. It is the most humane type of lead to help with direction and pulling. Unlike a pinch collar, choke collar, ect. it does not hurt the dog at all. When the dog walks in front of you and pulls it turns their nose towards you or the leash and they walk that way. You can purchase one for 13-15 dollars on www.dog.com and it comes with a dvd to show how to use it. I have tried many things, this is the best!

A gentle lead is a good thing to get, but for training only. Not to use everytime you take your dog for a walk. Your dog will never learn to walk on a leash if you use it all the time. Another way is this. When you take your dog for a walk and he sarts pulling just a tiny bit, turn around and go the oppisite way. Tell your dog "come" . Keep doing this. He will get the message after a while. This may take a while, depending how old your dog is, so be patient.

I have a 65lb. German Shepard that pulled me at first, but then every time she would start to pull me, I would do one of two things: 1) Just stand still with your feet planted into the ground until the dog stops and then I call her to me and pet her until she calms down, or 2) Pull hard enough for the dog to feel the resistance now don't hurt him but just pull him in your direction and get him back toward your side again. P.S. Sometimes I will have to do this several times at first, but he/she will get the idea and slow down gradually. Good luck.

my advice would be to get a haulty..I have a husky/lab that pulled all of the time while on a leash and now with the haulty my 6 year old nephew could walk her with no problem...they are NOT a MUZZEL but are worn like one...when they start to pull this makes there head go down words and they stop pulling...you can get this from Pet Value. Or that is where I got my anywaym you may be able to get them from other stores as well...they cost about $15.00

he may be excited by taking a walk with you and wants to explore. He may be trying to hurry to things he is smelling.

If you want him to stop that behavior , you can try teching him to heel.

when he starts to pull, you stop, command him to HEEL and guide him to your side, then pet him.

start walking again , with a short lead, so he gets the idea he needs to stay next to you. If he starts pulling , do the same thing , Stop, Heel, pet and start off again .

It should not take him too long to get the idea.

If that doesnt work you can try a harness, some of them make it easier for the dog to pull you though.

I have used a choke chain for a large dog that would not stop that behavior. When he pulls he gets choked.

So who's the alpha, you or your pit? It sounds like the dog is the alpha to me.
I too have tried the Gentle Lead with my GSD. All it did was whip her head in an awkward way and I was afraid it would hurt her neck in the long run. I ended up taking her to a trainer who helped her get along with the leash.
Good luck and remember, YOU are the alpha of the family.

"My secret" to effectively walking my Great Dane is to use the choke collar that I bought at my local Petsmart. - My dane KNOWS that I MEAN BUSINESS when I "pop" (pull) the leash instead of letting him drag me around.
It is all a matter of letting him know who is ALPHA, him or me.
