Wordpad saves documents in RTF format. This document format allows you to save fonts, special characters, and document structure as well as the text itself. Notepad can only save the text and does not store formatting information. You can paste into Notepad and then copy from Notepad when you want to remove hidden characters that are unwanted. (This technique is used when you want to copy text as programming code or if you want to copy text as HTML. Otherwise, the hidden characters and formatting will break these applications.)

RTF can be read by most word processors and is an excellent format to use if you want to move a word processing document between different incompatible word processors.

It is simpler than WordPad and has less features.
WordPad saves its files in the .doc format which is usually opened by default by Microsoft Word. NotePad saves in the .txt format.

Notepad is mostly used for people who write HTML (websites) and computer programs. I use it to keep notes on usernames, ect.

Notepad is also used for editing text. It is not very good for doing anything other than basic editing. It is only used mostly when there is no other program available or the user does not know how to use the better programs that are available. Microsoft Word is so very much better. .
