I'm in a sort of relationship where she finds it nearly impossible to open up. She says she feels love for me, but can't allow herself to be with me because one of us will get hurt. It's always been like that for her, no matter the guy. So why is it so hard for her?

Her fears or previous experiences keep her in a shell that she has constructed around herself to guard her and any other person she loves from getting hurt the same way again. You're going to have to chisel your way into her shell littlest bit by littlest bit till she realizes that it is possible and alright to let you in. if you've ever done any chiselling work, it takes TIME, and that's what I'm getting at here. Sending a wrecking ball in there to get her out would not be the way to go.

How long were her other relationships? Stick with her, time will open that shell up.

Some people can be shy. Give her time.
