It's usually just a small ring that you wear on your left finger. It's usually something younger guys give to their girls. It's more of a high school and college kind of thing.. The older populations ( 25 and up) don't normally do this.. It is the ring before the engagement ring though. I hope this helped. Good luck!

I haven't heard of guys giving promise rings in many many years,but it used to be when your high school sweetheart would give you a ring or his class ring as a promise to go steady or even a promise to marry you one day. Yes, it came way before an engagement ring. But if your young, you have a long life ahead of you. Hopefully college and a career and alot of fun along the way. If your young,accept the ring,tell him you love it and be happy for the right here and right now. If God means for it to be,it will be whether you promise or not. Good luck!!!

Yes a "promise ring" is a ring signifying that the intent is to marry the person and is given before the engagement ring. It may have started because they are cheaper or it gives the girl time to think about the possibility of whether she wants to be engaged to the person giving the ring. Good Luck

I was given a promise ring. Its the ring that is given before the engagement ring. Its to promise to get married. Its nice to have. It shows people that you are taken and you are proud/happy in the relationship. :)

It is not a required ring...but for couples who are not able to get married due to age, money, distance, etc. a promise ring is a nice way to make a commitment without all the obligation and expense of wedding planning

My husband gave me a promise ring. He was in college in Maine and I was in college and working in Washington (we're both from WA). He gave me the ring as a commitment to making our long distance relationship work as we weren't ready to get engaged yet.
When we decided we were ready to get married, he proposed and bought me an engagement ring. I, of course, also have a wedding ring. The promise ring and wedding band are the same style ring and we had all three rings soldered together to form one ring that I absolutely love.
Some parents will give their daughters a "promise ring" as an agreement between them that she will abstain from sexual activity until marriage. This is very common in the Christian community.

Um, well...it's like a symbol of your love or whatever. But my last boyfriend gave me a "promise ring" and then we broke up about 5 weeks later. So I would say it's a jinx.
