I see no one's mentioned the main reason that smoking is still legal.....TAXES. Sure, legislators will tout the benefits of stopping smoking, but without the smokers (at least 20% of Americans still smoke) the taxes collected for state revenues would take a huge drop, which the legislators wouldn't want to have happen. If the day ever comes when smoking became illegal, you can bet your bottom dollar that we'd all be paying a lot more on food taxes, gas taxes, property taxes, etc.

Because they are HYPOCRITES. They want the taxes and revenue it brings in but also want to blame it for every disease known to mankind. It's a way to blind people to the effects of smog, pesticides, medications etc that are contributors if not the causes of many of these diseases. People get lung cancer that have NEVER smoked. And if they really wanted people to give up smoking they would buy the no smoking aids and give them away to smokers instead of charging them $50 for them and giving the money to stupid ad campaigns that do nothing to stop smoking. By they way I don't smoke but it is obvious to me what a con it all is.

Unfortunately, tobacco companies have too much money and are therefore too powerful to care about the welfare and health of the people that give them their money. If tobacco became illegal to manufacture or sell, these powerful companies would no longer be making money. So, they do all they can to make sure that never happens.

same with alcohol. im guessing because it was manufactured back in the day before they knew it was bad for you. when people get addicted, its hard to just stop the manufacturers.

Because the government makes a lot of money off of the taxes they charge for it.

It is profitable for the tobacco companies and the government.

So is drinking alcohol if you are of age. It doesn't say you have to be smart to do either. Both are very, very bad for you, so if you haven't started please don't. The life you save may very well be your own.
