In religious teachings they always teach that one should not have or guided by the EGO in our dealings with the fellow human beings. The person who is less egoistic is considered to be an"ideal person". Whereas in psychological teachings they always insists that one should have a strong ego so that one could develop one's personality. How do we reconcile these opposite positions so as to lead a good life?

It is all in the understanding of the word ego. In religion-or atleast in the Christian faith- ego is defined as pride. God hates pride but wants believers to have confidence is how HE feels about us and the authority we have in Christ. The ego in psychology is speaking about confidence. In both pride is a gate way for hate and violence. Most people confuse pride and confidence whether someone who sees someone displaying is and the person displaying. it is a very thin line between the two and that is why most do not know when they have crossed it. Hope that helped.

Everything in our world is Paradox. Because the human
being itself is a paradox. We are both a physical and a
spiritual being.
The spiritual aspect of Ego is the desire for self-expression. Which brings forth creativity and invention.
At the lower level of the human psyche, it is only false prides , like sexism, racism, nationalism, and religious intolerance. Which is the Ego overcompensating for a lack of self-esteem. (Self-love, self-worth, and self-respect). The lack of self-esteem being created by the constant criticism from others.
King Solomon said, "All is vanity and vexation of spirit!"
Some say that means meaningless. But Solomon didn't use the word vain. To do something in vain is meaningless. He used the word Vanity. Talking about egotism and false pride. Feeding the Ego!
All the things many do. Feeling sorry for themselves. Acting bigger than they are. And pointing the finger at others. They do to make themselves feel better. When in reality. When they behave in these ways toward others.
It only makes them feel more like poop.

To have an ego is to feel that you are better than some one else or in other words to feel that you are a better person than you are. To have confidence in your ability to do a job or the knowledge you posses is a very good thing. If you realize that God has given you the ability to do all that you do, and that he gave others abilitys that you also lack even if you cannot see those abilitys in the outward person or that they may have not tried to magnify them as you have your abilitys.

Lots of meanings for the word.
Saul who became Paul had a very big ego meaning he exercised power over others and was confident in his dealings. But he wasn't listening to the Holy Spirit. After his conversion he became the most ambitious of the disciples and could stand up to their critcism of him. If he had remained unconverted you could consider him egotistical, but after committing his will to God's will he could be an instrument of great worth

EGO AS DEFINED IN PSYCHOLGY IS SELF CENTREDNESS.EGO IN VEDANTA HAS ALTOGETHER A DIFFERENT MEANING BEING THE SPECK THROUGH WHICH THE UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS OPERATES. EGO IN VEDANTA IS A COMBINATION OF PSI ENERGY AND CONSCIOUSNESS AND CAN REMAIN AS A WITNESS. WHEREAS EGO IN PSYCHOLOGY IS JUST THE CENTRE OF THE PSYCHE. PSYCHOLOGY FALLS FLAT BEFORE VEDANTA. THE REASON BEING THAT THE PSYCHOLOGITS AND PSYCHIATRISTS CANNOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN BRAIN AND MIND.IN VEDANTA IT IS CLEARLY DIFFERENTIATED, AND SPACE CONSCIOUSNESS OF SPACE THOUGHTS ARE SEPERATED. THIS IS THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE ANSWER.
