After you do the first subtraction, you'll always get a three digit number where the second digit is 9, and the sum of the first and third digits is also 9.

Because of this, when you add the reverse of this new number to itself, the addition of the ones column will always be 9, the addition of the 10s column will always be 180, and the addition of the hundreds column will always be 900. Add these together and you always get 900 + 180 + 9 = 1089.
