i have a frequent problem that happens where i work 12+ hrs a day on a regular basis and i'm so tired and worn out but when i come home and lay down, i can't sleep! i end up staying up all night because i can't fall asleep, even when i have every appliance and light in the house turned off, i stay up, with my thoughts in a constant stream, until i have to be up the next morning for work again. is this normal? do i have a serious problem or is it something minor?

I used to have the same problem..Long hours no sleep. I finally had to quit my job. What happens is whenever your body is up and active for over 8 hours your brain has a very hard time releasing serotonin to help you relax. Therefore you are on the primal defense Adrenalin mode instead of relaxing.

It sounds like you're just under a lot of stress. If you can, go see a doctor. Maybe he/she can prescribe some sleep aids. If you can't go see a doctor, try taking a really hot bath with some chamomile or lavender and light some candles so that your body will relax. If noises don't bother you, go out and buy a "sounds of nature" cd that plays the sound of rain and other sounds that come from nature. Turn it on with the volume low just before you get into bed. Another suggestion is to wash or change your sheets often. I find that I sleep so much more peacefully and comfortably on clean crisp sheets that have just been washed. Hope this helps some! :)

Try doing something to wind down before you go to sleep...A warm shower works for me...also, it may be too quiet try turning on a fan..or the TV turned down to a low volume....another thing...about the constant stream of thoughts...try laying in a comfortable position and taking deep breathes.Inhale until you get that full feeling in your chest and when you release it imagine the air coming out of every part of your body working its way all the way down to your toes....count the breaths as you exhale....Don't allow your self to think about anything else...I'm usually asleep by deep breath number 20.. Hope something helps...If it doesn't you could try something like Tylenol Pm or Benadryl....or you may need to see a doctor...

You could have some depression going on along with your insomnia but if so it is probably minor. However, I think I would at least go in and have a complete physical done and make sure that there are no underlying problems before you try to resolve the insomnia. Talk with your physician and together come up with what is best for you.

I suppose it gets easier over time. It's normal. You have to change your biological whatever it's called. Try to stay consistent, even if your just laying in bed. It's harder depending how long you've had your sleeping habits. But I know, it can seem hard at times and it really can affect your life in a big way. Stay busy in the day, maybe exercise and no naps. Same time to bed, same time to rise, except on Friday's and Saturday's.

Sounds like you have a serious case of insomnia. Limit your food intake, caffiene, and exercise at least a few hours before you will need to go to bed. I have had this problem my whole life. Your doctor can prescribe something like ambien which works GREAT. Or you can purchase plain bendadryl and take a couple of them about an hour before you want to go to bed. Works like a champ for me. If this insomnia lasts for more than 2 weeks you really should see your doctor. Lack of sleep can bring on all kinds of health issues.

Talk to your doctor about using a sleeping pill for a short time to break this cycle.

Stop drinking caffein: coffee, tea, energy drinks. You will then sleep like a baby
