Scholarships that pay for books and tuition are not included as income. The portion that pays for room and board may be taxable.

You can't take a tuition deduction for tuition paid with a scholarship, so if your son received a full scholarship you get NO tuition deduction.

If the tuition was paid by scholarships, then you can't take a tuition deduction for them. If scholarships paid only part, then you could take a deduction based on the additional amount.

Does he have to claim them as income? Yes, he can if he is filing separately from you but if you are claiming his tuition I think you have to have him on your tax form as a dependent.
