A society that is aware of the individual, and developes an awareness for the needs of people, and is aware that it is made of people who can care, is not made up of people who are alone.

He means that if you have no opportunity for development, then your most basic of needs will be the most valued by you. If there is advancement (technological, industrial, financial), or anything that will open the doors for you to continually reach a higher level of prosperity, then what you have is not worth as much to you as what you know you can have if you take the opportunity. Unfortunately, even though this sounds like it would be good to have opportunity, I think his real point was to say - you are going to miss the value in the small things once the doors of opportunity open. Which means you'll forget what really matters.

The best things that come out of society come from the creativity and vision that one person can have. A lot of times a society wants everyone to think about something in the same way, but Einstein argues that it's only when society allows (or even encourages) someone to branch off that anything new can be found. If society does not let people grow in their own unique way, or forces them to conform, then they wont be able to reach their full potential.

Einstein is simply saying that human society's true value is to provide each individual with the oppotunity for self-development that fits the needs of that individual.

Anything valuable to human society really depends on how it can be used on the individual level.

when something is invented people have to find a way to make it work into their life. They have to have a need, not just a want.
I did not need a computer, I wanted one. I do not need a computer to live, but I need to be on-line to talk to the friends I have found on this WWW.
We need light in this day and age...that is a necessity. Oil lamps just are not on the market much anymore...they are for black outs and outages, so making a better light bulb is making one that would last longer, or in different colors according to the persons needs.

"Accorded the individual" means given to or made available to the person. People who are given no opportunities are not too likely to develop into skilled people.

it means that every situation differs on the person, because people can be going through different things, and that what someone might get from a situation...someone else can learn from it in a different sense. The situation may seem not important to one, yet to another it can teach them a valuable and eye opening experiance.

You have to consider Einstein's era. I think he like escaped Germany around the Hitler time as did most of the scientists in America, so if my old memory is correct, he is probably referring to the fact that in America he was free to explore and experiment to his liking. It is called freedom. Opportunity is a word in the thesaurus for freedom
