it is a natural dog hunting instinct used to cover their odor so that they will not be smelt by their prey when sneaking up on them.

Because they have a very keen sense of smell. What smells rotten to us, only peaks their interest.
They're curious animals, plus they have smaller brains.

I think the worst is poop....my mutts love to roll in cow patties and munch on deer droppings. Very, very weird to be sure. Why? There will never be a definitive answer unless you can find a dog that speaks English and is able to answer these questions. Good luck on that one....

unlike cats, dogs have the ability to scavenge. this is a survival trait to see them through pack-less times. also, regarding rolling in faeces/dead things, another survival trait. no prey animal ever had to fear dung or carrion. if they smell this, they will remain at ease. if they smell dog, they will flee.

to us what smells bad is to them what is a stronger oder they can find out more and when they roll in its its to cover up there natural oder that can give them away to there prey
they have natural instincts and they were bred from wolves

because they don't know if it's rotten or not...but most of all they just don't care.Do you know that dogs have a stronger immune system which destroys more germs than humans....
