My girlfriend's uncle is dying from kidney failure from severe drinking. He is 42 years old and stopped dialysis. Today he went to get a reading done from a spiritualist. The lady told my girlfriend's father that the doctors are wrong, and that he can be saved by taking a herbal remedy to clean his system out. He has swollen legs, feet and is growing weak everyday. What kind of herbal remedies are out there?

Very bad move. His liver enzymes will be very low due to alcoholism and he will be unable to metaboloze many substances. Most herbs are metabolized in the liver. Giving him herbs without knowing whether they are metabolized by the cytochromeP450 pathway means the concentration of active ingredients in the herbals willl be at toxic levels in his blood and could potentially kill him. If his kidneys are working, he won't be able to excrete things properly either. Most doctors adjust the level of drugs given to compensate for decreased filtration by the kidneys.
If you gave him these herbs, you could be convicted of murder.
Why is this psychic practicing medicine without a license? Are you unaware that it is a crime in all 50 states? She gets a few bucks for making stuff up and he gets to die? Does any of this make sense to you? It doesn't to me.

I am delighted that sleeping pills do not agree with you, since it only takes three pills taken 3 nights in a row for some people to be hooked. There are few herbal drugs that are of much use either. Best option, don't read, watch TV or exercise for at least 30 minutes before retiring. Take a warm caffeine free drink before bed. You could also try lavender oil either on the pillow or in a bath which is fairly sedative.

If he wants to live I would certainly try it. He has been knowingly killing himself for a very long time, maybe he just wants to go. 42 is young, maybe he was not aware of the damage/his system was more sensitive, try anything if that is what he wants.
