I would go with themed accessories, maybe his (or your) favorite team. Paint the walls to go with the team colors. Maybe just pick ONE color to keep the contrast down, most team colors are high contrast and you want the room to be calming. As far as accessories:
You could drill into baseballs and use them for drawer pulls or finials at the end of a curtain rod.
You could make throw pillows for the bed that look like bases, gloves, and balls.
You could mount a baseball bat to the wall with pegs attached to hang coats, hats, etc.
You could dress his stuffed animals in baseball jerseys for infants, maybe even shelf them on the wall to look like fans in the bleachers.
You could do a tromp loi effect of bleachers on a wall, with ONE bench in front to look like the bottom one. It could be a long shelf painted so it looks like a bench (bottom blends into the carpet. Later on that shelf could be redone, put dividers in, and turn the other way to sit in his closet for teeshirts.
You could do a puppet stage dressed out like a concession stand.
You could use lockers for storage.
You could frame any autographs you have, or programs from games and hang them on the wall, or posters of players.
You could make an area rug that looks like a ball diamond: You can buy carpet in squares, not samples, these are carpet TILES. Turn a remnant of kitchen vinyl into the base by cutting it into a diamond shape. Using beige squares for the bases and pitchers mound, and green for the field, glue these down to the vinyl. You can even cut the pieces to work in a tan perimeter for "tracks"
You can make a fort or lofted bed to look like a dugout. Usually the benches face out but you would turn this around. Perhaps a small TV, bookshelf with bench facing the wall so kids could sit in a line and watch TV. You could section it off by curtaining off a safe version of a chain link fence looking material (and rope netting is NOT safe alternative) to drop down off the side of the bed, and leave a doorway. I hope this makes sense?

I would say best thing to do would be to paint the walls with a cloud theme, then just accessorize with the sports stuff.
That could be changed easily with time and little headache. He will always feel happy too and like he is playing outside on the field.
Then, when he gets older, you can just paint over the clouds with the same color blue and be done with it.
Good luck!

Paint each wall a different primary color and add a different border, set of decals, posters or shelves in each corresponding color to the next wall. Place some trophies, collector cards and pen ants on the walls/shelves. Match one sport theme fabric for bed cover & curtains and finish with a dark blue window blinds.
