Since when did a person passionate about their faith, became an extremist?

These are two very different things.

Well simply we need to look at the definitions

fun·da·men·tal·ism [fùndə mént'l ìzzəm]
noun
1. movement with strict view of doctrine: a religious or political movement based on a literal interpretation of and strict adherence to doctrine, especially as a return to former principles
2. support for literal explanation: the belief that religious or political doctrine should be implemented literally, not interpreted or adapted

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ex·trem·ism [ik strm ìzzəm]
noun
holding of extreme opinions: the holding of extreme political or religious views or the taking of extreme actions on the basis of those views

Some fundamentalists can be extremists, but not all extremists are fundamentalists.

For example, the so called Wahabi of the Saudi Arabia are fundamentalists they like a literal interpretation with no room for understanding, but they are not the terrorists.

The terrorists are exteremists by claiming people are dwellers of the fire and killing them unjustly, but they are not fundamentalists because if they had any proper knowledge, they would know it is forbidden to kill a civilian, a women, or child in a LEGAL WAR, called by a RIGHTFUL leader of and Islamic nation.

Peace Be With You

Actually you are right. But in popular usage, the term f"undamentalist" has been appropriated so often by extremists that has been hijacked by them. And as a result, the two have become almost interchangeable in popular usage.

An annoying instance of the fact that language evlves and changes. Perhaps genuine fundamentalists need to come up with a new identifier so we can distinguish them in conversation more easily.

Fundamentalism has a very specific meaning. Fundamentalism as a religious movement had its origins shortly after the publication of a pamphlet called "The Fundamentals," stressing the veracity of the Bible. It was published in response to the appearance of Darwin's "Origin of Species."

Extremism is a noun that might be applied to any dangerously over-enthusiastic support of nearly anything. One might indulge in extremism over lawn care, and shoot anyone who steps on the grass.

Of course it's not the same thing.
Fundamentalism means adhering to the fundamental tenants of your faith. For Christians,it would be the virgin birth, the resurrection of Jesus, monotheism, you get the picture.
So,that means that all Christians are essentially 'fundamentalists'.
Fundamentalism, however, has come be a dirty word, something to be feared. Most people associate it with 'strict Christians'.
Extremism would be killing those who disagree with you, flying planes into buildings, blowing up trains stations, that type of thing.

There is nothing wrong with fundamentalism per se, as long as you keep your passion to yourself. I think fundamentalism becomes extremist when you try to force your passion on others, esp. if you use legislation or other extreme means to do it.

fundamentalism implies following the core of the religion which is peace and submission to God...extremism calls for fighting which implies drawing ur attention to wordly business and distracting from what really matters:God and the after life.

A person becomes a terrorist/etremist when a person values their god's words above those of human life.
