There is no concrete answer. They purr when they are content or unhappy. They can even purr when they are sick, in pain or even when they are dying. The book "207 Secrets Your Cat Wants You To Know" says the following:

"For a kitten, purring starts off as a homing device. When he's just a few days old, his mother starts purrs, he feels the vibrations and then knows where to find her so he can nurse. Afterwards he purrs while she feeds him so his mother knows he's getting milk"
"Dominant cats purr when they're approaching inferior cats."
"Cats have false vocal cords, and air passing over these probably make" the purring sounds.

mi new kitty acts The same way it starts to squirm when i pick it up. but then it starts purring.. at first i couldn't figure out why he would do this.. i later found out that they purr for many reasons mostly tough when their content. if your Kitty tarts to purr when you pick it it it means that it knows that its safe with you but it just doesn't like to be handled at The moment.. another way to tell th mood of you cat it by tail signals, if its tail is straight up in the air it usally means tht it is very happy and when i is down it means that it is scared.

i hope that my answer will be of use to you...

GOOD LUCK!!!

He's just playing hard to get. ;p

Also, it's a reflex of sorts. It's the feline version of human vocal cords, but uniquely connected to expressions of joy and contentedness.

Purring is also a unique "compass" for cats...I can always tell when one of the cats isn't feeling well, because they don't purr (or purr less heartily.)

Cats can purr to relax themselves in stressful situations. Don't always assume it's positive.

There happen to be so many reasons why....alot of people tend to think, just because a pretty kitty is purring, she is automatically happy. That is so false, researchers are still trying to figure out exatly...why though.
