It really upsets me to see a dog chained up and never get to go inside. My dog has the run of the house and even though we have to tether her when she is outside the tether is much longer than most people use. We also don't leave her outside if she wants in or if we are away.

I think it goes back to when people had farm dogs. People had dogs that worked outside with them all day and were left loose at night to protect the live stock from predators at night. These dogs were loved and appreciated by their owners although they didn’t get into the house. They had work to do and it was likely that these working dogs were too dirty to let inside. When people started moving to the cities and suburbs people still wanted to have dog, but it was no longer practical to let them run loose. They had been brought up with the notion that dogs should stay outside, so chaining them up seemed a practical solution. This notion was passed on from generation to generation.

I am with you though. My dog is part of the family and she is in when we are in and out when we are out.

Some people get a dog for the wrong reasons. Could be spur of the moment or because your kid saw a cute puppy in the dog store window. Once the excitement of having a new pet to play with wears off, no one wants to take care of the dog. Maybe that's why they're left outside. I'm just assuming here because I've witnessed a case like this.

That is a good question! IF you ever find an answer I would like to here it! I have a dog and would never just leave him outside all day tie on a short leash. My neighbors have 3 dogs all tied in their yard. They don't go inside the house only the garage and don't get walked regularly. They are always so amazed at how good my dog is and how friendly he is with their kids. They just don't seem to make the connection between treating your dog kindly and good behavior. It makes me sooo mad!

a variety of reasons. A parent may give into a child who wants a pet. when the dog gets older and no longer a cute puppy the child grows tired of it. The parent has no invested interest in the pet so it becomes a nuisance. Some people see dogs differently. Some are purchased solely as guard dogs. These are not seen as "family members" as many people see dogs. There are two examples. there are plenty more.

Because they are cruel and inhumane. There is no reason for anyone to own an animal if they are going to tie it outside. I'd call animal control or do something to save the dog... Please consider that because it is animal abuse. How would they like to be tied up all the time. Maybe they need to try it and see if they like it and on a short rope.

Good question. Some places are starting to make it illegal to tie a dog outside. Being tied outside is correlated with higher rates of aggression and even of higher rates of killling humans- believe it or not.

Leaving a dog outside while you're away is particularly risky, I agree.

well some people think they are cute at the moment and then get tired of them,or they think they need more attention then they think oh i better go get a dog,and some people get depressed, and think they have no one in the world that cares so therefore he-or-she gets a dog and when they get a boy-friend/girl-friend and they may or may not like the dog......but i certainly dont tie my dog outside...

I don't understand that either. I guess they have the dog to be a guard dog. Or just "for show", along with the "beware of dog" sign. When I was growing up, we had a dog-big one-and she was the pet of our household. Indoor/outdoor dog. Mostly indoor. Treated with TLC and respect, her natural instinct was to protect us when/if needed. I'm glad you love your dog the right way, and take good care of her.Take care.

i dunno maybe to make you feel like you are better than them somehow

people do the best they can, even if they arent perfect owners the dogs have better lives that way then in worse situations, unless the dog is really neglected or abused i see no reason to compare the way other people manage thier pets to your own

some people see dogs as property, some as an extention of themselves, i personally view my dogs as family, but my guess it the only reason you wrote this is to feel better about yourself

so

BECAUSE YOUR A BETTER OWNER

I'll never understand it either. It breaks my heart to see a dog whose whole life is spent on a chain.
