I'm a student who just came to the States. Sometimes when I call people, the answering machine asks me to leave a message. I don't know what is the proper way to leave a message. In other words, I don't know how to organize my sentences and what words I should use. Thank you1

you can say hi (their name). this is (your name) calling in reference to (what your calling for). can you please call me back at (your number). thank you. goodbye.

Or if you want to leave a quick message, you can say:
hey (their name). this is (your name). call me when you get a chance at (your number). bye bye

Tell them the date and time that you are calling, i.e. "this is normobrian, it's 10 o'clock on tuesday morning. I'm calling to let you know....". Just speak like you're talking to the person that you're trying to reach.
