There ia a daily train each way from Sydney to Brisbane. It takes about thirteen hours and arrives in Brisbane about 9am. There is a day train that goes as far as Casino but you have to get a bus from there to Brisbane. The return train leaves Brisbane early and arrives in Sydney in the evening.
From Sydney to Perth there are two options. The first is to take the Indian Pacific all the way through Broken Hill in western NSW. The second is to take the train to Melbourne - there is a daytime and night train - and then the train to Adelaide and join the Indian Pacific in Adelaide. This would allow you to see something of Melbourne and Adelaide on the way.
Whatever you do, if you are travelling on trains at night, get a sleeper. It is more expensive but worth it. First Class is also worthwhile if you can afford it. Meals are usually included with the ticket price on the Indian Pacific but check.
Trains are more expensive than flying but if you enjoy long distance train travel it is worth it.
The other major train journeys in Australia are Brisbane to Cairns; Townsville to Mt Isa; and the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Springs.

The Indian Pacific is the last remaining trans-continental train journey in the world. This amazing train traverses Australia from coast to coast, between the sparkling waters of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, a distance of 4352 kilometres (2700 miles).
The duration is 3 nights each way.
A one way trip costs between $600 and $1800 Aust.
It's a good way to see a lot of Australias desert landscape but you meet great people along the way..
