I agree with Cockatiel Lover.Night frights are the most scary thing for a bird lover. My sister has 11 cockatiels and I have 2 so we know how you feel. They happen to my sisters birds often.I would bring your bird to the shop or vet when it opens.

He probably banged himself around his cage a good bit. Clean off the bloody parts by holding him in a towel, talking softly and camly to him and use a cotton ball soaked in hydrogen peroxide (except around the nostrils. If you can, dab those wounds with a q-tip that's not dripping but has a bit of hydrogen peroxide on the tip). Check that a blood feather isn't broken and still bleeding. If it is, pull the feather out at the skin line then treat the skin by applyting flour or baking soda until the bleeding stops. He might be acting strange the next day. Give it time. The night frights are common in cockatiels. They're totally blind at night, can hardly see anything in dim light so any abrupt noise or shadow will make them panic. Please be more careful to have a night light for him, perhaps have a small one on all the time so this doesn't happen again when you leave.

First clean the toes by spritzing them with water or gently clean them with a washcloth, or simply let the bird wade in water - whatever he'll tolerate with the least stress. Then dab them dry. If they still bleed you'd ordinarily cake on some septic powder that's made for this purpose and is sold in every good pet shop (it's for animals of all kinds, mine's called Kwik Stop). You don't sound like you'd have that on hand so you can use flour or cornstarch until the bleeding stops.

If there's no obvious damage elsewhere I'd say the blood on the feathers was transferred there from the feet during preening. Above all be calm.

cockatiels are almost completely blind in the dark so if a seed toy or lader falls in their cage they can wake up and have a fright sometimes nightlights work the best other times (a crazy thing i do) i put the cage right next to my bed so if he has a night fright i use sweet words and he will not get them as much.

as for the blood if the bleeding has stopped and there are no open wounds i would leave it alone and not fiddle with it on the other hand if it is still bleeding and the bird is in pain i would try to find a bird emergency room if you live in the jersey area i know a good one even before you can get him to the vet just wait calmly and put a heating pad on low in his cage.

Most healthy birds clot quickly so once thee is dried blood, the bird can be cleaned up. BE GENTLE!!!

Try and set up the cage in a manner that prevents night frights from ending in injury (soft toys and easy access to perches.

Especially cockatiels are prone to night frights, a light is a good idea, also a safe, quiet place for sleeping.

Yes, cocketiel lover is right, 'tiels are KNOWN for night frights, and many owners keep nightlights or partly folder back covers or whatever... they really cant see. and unfortunately they land on bottom and sometimes on a wing and break a feather. I think the advise was sound to gently warm water on cloth, clean as much as he will let you, so you can see if anything is an open, broken feather that you need to remove or if anything is damaged worse even. if you murmer gently, and or do whatever calms him for you while you do this, it should be ok, you may have to hold him wrapped in a towel and gently try to. after examining when as clean as it will get... it may not feel up to its own bath.. but worth a try.. i think youll have the answer as to if it needs nmore attention from a vet. but please do read some of the great sites about tiels online, they usually explain about their night frights. it seems to be something they are prone to. take care and good luck!

Wipe his toes but don't do anything with his feathers or his nostrils! you don't want to scare him any more by putting an unfamiliar object around his face or his wings. then, put a big (big enough for him to get in, small enough so he won't drown) bowl if sly warm water in his cage so he can clean himself off...

good luck!

gently wipe his feet and mabey his feathers...i would say give him a small bowl with luke warm water( water thats not HOT but not COLD...just barly kinda warm to touch~you dont want to burn him or give him a cold..and he might clean himself...other than that I think he should be ok... go to this site http://www.cockatielcottage.net/main.html i think it has a bunch of good tips on cockatiels:) hope this helps
