When I am chewing something like potato chips it sounds so loud to me but not very loud to others...why is this?

Because it's so close to your ear drums! It's noise made in an eclosed space, and although it's usually full of "stuff", there are cavities (sinuses) that help reverberate the sound.

To make it sound even louder, plug your ears to block out any outside sound!

It probably has something to do with the fact that whatever you are chewing is basically in your head while you are chewing it. Also, you ears are attached to your head.

Try this
YOUR mouth is much closer to YOUR ears
than it is to anyone else's --- try taking a mouthful of chips
and placing your mouth near someone else's ear and see
what results you get--- someone will smack you in the mouth !!!

thus carrying sound better.
