ask your avian vet to do a DNA test which will require him to send a small amount of blood collected from a toenail or a feather to a lab. This is the only way to tell the sex 100% on a macaw. You can also do this yourself by ordering a kit online at http://www.avianbiotech.com/ But unless you know what you are doing when you collect the blood, I would let the vet do it

The only way to tell is to get a blood or DNA test. You can look online for DNA blood tests. Some require only that you send in a newly plucked feather (Your bird probably won't appreciate that much!) and others require a bit of blood collected in a pipette from a toenail clipped a bit too short. (I know- doesn't sound like a fun way to spend an afternoon!)

These places will send you a kit for collecting the stuff. You typically pay in advance, they send you the kit, you send it back wtih the feather or blood in it as per their directions, and they send you a document back with the info on it.

A vet can find out for you through a blood test. You can not tell through color patterns like you can with some bird species. The only other way is if the macaw lays an egg and then its obviously a female. :)

You can't tell unless you have a blood DNA test done. Some people say it's better to have a male parrot than a female parrot. My vet said it wasn't nessicary to have one or put the bird through that stress unless you plan on breeding the bird.
