Crack is more prevalent in poor minority communities. It is cheaper and somewhat more addictive than cocaine.

The real reason is because the leaders in the African American community lobbied lawmakers to put harsher penalties on crack offenses in an attempt to clean up their own communities. The hope was that putting higher penalties on these crimes would help but it really hasn't had that much of an impact.

Many subscribe to the myth that the white community did it as a form of racism. Unfortunately these people are the victims of false information.

If you are really interested and do not believe me I would suggest you read the committee reports and legislative record pertaining to the laws governing the penalties.

Crack was a much cheaper drug and hence was sold largely among all of the community. In order to try to stop this the Gov under the Reagan administration made the penalty fro the possesion of Crack very severe.
