Since this budgie obviously means a lot to her, she'll have to do what's best and what probably should have been done a week ago. Take it to a certified avian vet (fine one near you: http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/ ) RIGHT NOW! A week is a long time for a bird, especially since birds are so good at hiding illnesses and weaknesses. I assume this having gone on for so long, this budgie's quite ill.

For preparedness, a checkup will be $50 to $80 US. On top of that are treatment costs. The first thing I believe they'll want to do is give some painkillers, since it seems (to me) the bird's in pain, and those are about $10. Without knowing anything else about the bird, and without even being a vet, I can't give you any more approximations, but good luck.

Also, my sympathies in regards to your mother's friend.

This bird needs to get to the vet ASAP. Look for an avian one as general vets often do not have experience with exotics such as parrots. You really can't wait on this. Birds hide illness very well (this is a survival trait) and when they do finally start showing signs of being ill, it is because they are close to death. Where are you? Maybe someone can recommend a vet with avian experience near you. You could also call the emergency vet closest to you and ask if they can care for birds or if they know of an avian vet nearby.

Can you tell if the blood is coming from the leg or if it's just on the leg? See if the blood is coming from a wound on the bird, possibly try to stop it, or see if it's coming from the vent. Either way, go to a veterinarian who's worked with birds before, go to the one that has taken care of this particular bird in the past if possible. Definitely watch it's behavior also since budgies, like other birds, can die from the trauma of losing their owner.

definately take her to an avian certified vet (find one near you here: www.aav.org/vet-lookup ) you should have taken her a long time ago, when you first noticed something was wrong. it may be too late. in the wild, birds are prey animals, so they hide their illnesses/symptoms, because if they show signs of weakness, they will be targeted for food. you need to pay close attention to little things that may indicate that your bird is sick. (i.e. not eating the same/as much, not as vocal, not as active, different poops etc.). when a bird actually shows obvious symptoms, it may be to late. take her to an avian certified vet ASAP!! go to an emergency clinic if it's after hours because this is abviously serious. good luck.

wow thats really odd=[ if it was bleeding the bird obviously was chewing on it. so it might hurt really bad or maybe it itches like hell and he chews it constantly making it painful. you could try taking it to the vet but i dunno really if he could do much..? good luck i hope it turns out for the best
