There are many ear cleaning solutions out there designed for dogs. I'd go to a pet supply store and buy some and follow the directions.

Don't use q-tips in a dog's ears. Use cotton balls.

I use a q-tip with mine, with or without water depending on what's in the ear needing to get cleaned. If the dog is spastic and will squirm and jump around then i'd suggest a cotton ball. Only because the q-tip is harder at the end at it would be a whole lot easier for the dog to try squirming away and push it's head really hard onto the q-tip, possibly damaging the ear. If it pushes a cotton ball further into it's ear, the damage factor is WAY down.

Try a brand named Nolvasan Otic.
I use it with every type of dog and it works great!!!
Use a cotton ball and add a few drops on it and viola!
clean ears lol. =]
P.S
Opticlear is used for eyes!!
We use it to clean the eyes of dogs and cats.
Nolvasan Otic is used for ears only!

You shouldn't use Q- Tips in dogs' ears!! I don't know how to stress this enough. You may end up going to far into the dogs' ear canal even if they are L shaped. You risk harming your dog if you press to hard.

I've used lots of products over the years but really like two products that I purchased at Petsmart made by Veterinarian's Best. One is called Ear Relief Wash and the other is Ear Relief Dry. You use the ear wash first and follow with the ear dry formula. They are gentle and non stinging, unlike alcohol. Both contain Aloe Vera as one of their ingredients. Apply with a cotton ball and never stick a Q-tip or other foreign object into the ears. These products are so good I wish I'd found them years ago!

Alcohol and a q-tip and/or cotton balls. Remember that dogs' ear canals are L shaped so you can get into them without harming the dog, just don't dig hard. If your dog fights a little, remember that alcohol is cold and the act is foreign to them. Just be gentle.

If this makes you nervous, though, there are ear cleansing solutions and pads at most pet stores.
