Melanin (not melatonin) is found in skin cells of almost everyone. UV light causes DNA damage and melanin helps repair that damage and protect other skin cells. That's why skin gets darker with sunlight, it's a defense mechanism. Darker skinned races have more of this pigment and can therefore protect themselves more effectively from the effects of radiation. Cancer (neoplasia) largely results from damage to DNA, so more melanin means less cancer.

this has nothing to do with the thickness of the skin; all humans have 4 basic layers. (5 on your palms and bottom of your feet)

melatonin is released by the pituitary and regulates day/night cycles.
