Kelly L - that is some interesting reasoning you have there. And so who paid for the potters field Judas or the priests?

There are two different Canonical references to the remainder of Judas' life:

* The Gospel of Matthew says that, after Jesus' arrest by the Roman authorities (but before his execution), the guilt-ridden Judas returned the bribe to the priests and committed suicide by hanging himself. The priests could not return the money to the treasury so they used it to buy a plot of ground in order to bury strangers. [2]
* The Acts of the Apostles (1:18) says that Judas used the bribe to buy a field, but fell down, and burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. This field is called Akeldama or Field Of Blood. Acts 1 goes on to describe how his place among the apostles was subsequently filled by Matthias.

Matthew 27:5 states that Judas hanged himself, whereas Acts 1:18 says that “pitching head foremost he noisily burst in his midst and all his intestines were poured out.” While Matthew seems to deal with the mode of the attempted suicide, Acts describes the results. Judas apparently tied a rope to the branch of a tree, put a noose around his neck, and tried to hang himself by jumping off a cliff. It seems that either the rope or the tree limb broke so that he plunged downward and burst open on the rocks below. The topography around Jerusalem makes such a conclusion reasonable.

When the gospel accounts are combined, it explains that Judas Iscariot tried to hang himself over a cliff, but the rope or tree limb broke and the Bible says he plunged down and burst open on the rocks below. The account in Matthew deals with the way he attempted to kill himself while the account in Acts describes the result of his attempt.

The accounts of the Gospel provide aspects of what happened to Judas. Combine them.

Judas went out and hung himself (presumably from the limb of a tree at the edge of a cliff). Subsequently the limb or the rope broke, his body fell and burst open.

He wrote a book, only recently found, telling how he followed Jesus's orders, much to his own distress. Research the Judas Gospell. He died a very old man of natural causes.

Edit: people are hanged not hung, bulls are hung.

They're the same account of Judas Iscarot. He hung himself before Jesus was crucified. But you have to realize there was more than one Judas.

Judas hung himself and apparently either the tree limb broke or whatever he used to hang himself with broke and his body fell unto the rocks below and he burst from the fall.

He tried giving back the silver he got from turning Jesus in and then he hung himself. Some people think he was murdered but more than likely, he killed himself because of guilt.

One account I read: he hanged himself, another said he jumped off a cliff. He couldn't deal with what he did.
