I got my cat a igloo basket about a year ago and no matter how I tried to encourage him to use it, he flat refused and would allways choose to sleep at the bottom of my bed. Since my wee dad died last week he has suddenly started sleeping in his basket and seems to be keeping his distance in a way. Do you think he can sence something. You always hear animals can sence things O bless I hope not.

I'm sure the cat can sense that you're feeling off so he has probably decided to stop playing games (read: getting his way) and try your way for a change.

Did your dad live in the same house as you? The cat could be missing your dad if they were close.

My cat was the opposite. When he would see me stress, he would come over and sit in my lap, purr, try to lick away the tears, etc.

each so often there basically isn't any reason we people can think of of to describe why a cat poops outdoors the field, so we could desire to do despite we are able to to deter it, utilising what a cat will understand (with a bit of luck). indexed below are some issues you may attempt: Get a clean litterbox (plastic absorbs odors and after a time the field will scent undesirable with none clutter in it) and new clutter (i could recommend the scoopable sort), and positioned kitty and all her stuff interior the washing room. make valuable she has a mattress of a few sort, even a folded towel will paintings, and sparkling the litterbox on a regular basis. Cats in many circumstances do no longer opt to get rid of close to their nutrition, so this could help harm her of the habit. She needs to stay interior the washing room 24/7 for roughly 2 weeks. you may flow to her oftentimes and check along with her so she would not experience lonely or punished. Small areas are comforting to cats. She could set up a howl for awhile, yet this does paintings. (I call this litterbox re-education a hundred and one). mutually as she is interior the washing room, sparkling the climate she's grimy with the two basic answer or Natures Miracle (or something comparable). those are enzymatic cleaners that relatively do away with the scent particularly than overlaying it up. Cats can scent issues we gained't and if the scent isn't thoroughly bumped off she would be attracted to that place. (in no way use ammonia because of the fact it smells too very like cat pee). After the two weeks, make valuable the litterbox is in a quiet region, outdoors of site visitors. in case you have greater effective than a million point on your place, there could be a field on each and each point. yet another element to think of roughly is the dimensions of the cat vs. the dimensions of the litterbox. maximum cats like somewhat privateness whilst they're doing their enterprise, so i purchase the biggest length coated litterbox i'm able to get. those supply the cat the privateness they choose and stop clutter scatter. I additionally get a carpet pattern or small rug to put in front of the field, which additionally facilitates sidestep clutter from being tracked on the floor. all the above assumes your cat is healthful. in case you notice something "diverse" approximately your cat, please take her to the vet to rule out any ailment.

Oh yes, animals do sense things. My younger cats knew when my old one had gone into her final illness. Before they would chase her a lot playing. But afterwards they didn't. They freaked a little when we had to take the old cat and have her put down. Some months later we were sorting through stuff to store, and we got the carrier that had taken her for her last ride. The male kitten sat there sniffing and polishing it for a long time.

sorry to hear of your loss :(

Cats are very sensitive to their environment. He knows something is very wrong - perhaps he thinks you are upset with him? Cats and other animals will generally do anything for you to make you feel better. Perhaps he thinks that by keeping his distance and sleep in his new basket, he will make you happier. Just give him lots of love (like you already do) and treats. Although you don't feel like it, it might be good for you to play some games with him with balls or chasey sticks. It will help him feel less threatened by your change in behaviour and it will also help you de-stress.

He will settle as you will. Take care.

Sorry animals can sense things, especially things like that. Cats are especially sensitive to any upset.
I wouldn't worry about him, as long as he isn't showing any illness or behaviour problems.
Give him an extra bit of fuss, which I'm sure will be great for both of you, and he will soon be back to normal.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Yes your cat can sense that you are upset. Your cat probably don't want to get you any more upset then you are, so he is doing what you want him to do. Keep paying attention to him. Like the others asked, Did your dad live with you?

I'm very sorry for your loss. And yes, your poor kitty is probably morning your father as well. When I lost one of my good old dogs, my other dog morned for about a week. He would sit at the door and whimper. It was as if he were waiting for her to come home. I still get choked up thinking about that. Animals are so wonderful.

You hang in there and take good care of yourself and your kitty.

Yes I think animals sense things, but it's not a bad thing, either he is trying not to stress you out more so he's doing what you want, or your dad had a talk w/him and he listened
