Most departments require that you spend time on the street in uniform patrol before you can move to a detective's bureau. I can tell you, though, that the best school that I detective or potential detective can take is the Reid Technique of Interrogation. It can be a little pricey, but it is unequalled in quality.

Police Officers earn the promotion to Detective through good police work and building a case for their own promotion. I recommend you get a 4-year degree, focus on your writing skills, and spend some time doing ride-a-longs or being a police cadet while in school.

Very few law enforcement agencies hire people without 4-year college degrees nowadays. To get hired, then promoted to detective would be very difficult. Remember, there are typically tests to take to promote to Detective. Your record as a police officer, your investigative skills, the test scores, how well you do in the promotional interview, and whether or not you have a degree... those things will all work together to make you a good candidate (or not) for promotion to detective.

First you have to graduate college and then a law enforcement academy. Once you're certified by the state you live in then you apply for a police job. 5-6 years once you gained enough experience and training you can apply to an investigator position. *(depending on availability) Good Luck

i totally agree with memphis lawdog. although i am a crim. just. major in college with my prof's being former cops, you'll have to be on the force for some time and depending on your ability to think fast and on your feet and the ability to do your job depends on what your superiors think of your work ethic

Be very observant, and don't go to a crime scene thinking you know what the answer is already. You have to have a very open mind.

I think you would have to join the Police Force and they will decide if you are suitable.
Good luck.
