I have no idea what year this was, my mother's brother and she has passed away, but I have always been told he went down with a sub. "Bottom of the ocean"...is NOT a funny answer by the way, thanks for YOUR help.
I am searching for somewhere that has a list of the names of navy crews (if that is what they are called) that never made it back.

Go to this website (http://www.oneternalpatrol.com/submarine-losses.htm). It lists all of the submarines lost in WWII and the personell on board. It is in alphabetical order by boat (Ship's name) so you will probably have to go through all of them to find the right one. Can also contact department of veterans affairs for info on your uncle. However, since you are not e dependent or heir (IO'm assuming) it will be difficult for you to obtain anything but very general info due to privacy laws. Hope this helped.

There is a WWII Submarine memorial in Seal Beach, Ca. 52 vessels, 372 officers and 3131 sailors all listed with the submarines they were killed on. You can walk onto the grounds and read the names for yourself. It's very moving.
