who is he
Some things we need to notice about Judas, he called Jesus teacher, he never called Jesus Lord or master as the other apostles did. This may be a hint how he saw Jesus. Jesus wanted to be known as Lord, not just teacher (Mk.12:37; Lk.20:42; Jn.9:36-38). While the other disciples wondered what kind of man Jesus was, a man that could calm the sea by a word, Judas accepted him only as Rabbi.

Judas, probably not realizing what he was doing, betrayed Jesus of Nazareth to the Roman authorities. He fulfilled prophecy regarding him, and after realizing what he had done, killed himself.

Regarding to the rediscovered Gospel of Judas, it is a Gnostic text that claims Jesus imparted special wisdom to Judas. Other such pseudepigraphal gospels exist in the names of John, Peter, and Thomas. It is not a historical document; it was a sacred text for the Gnostic religious elite, written sometime after the first century.

If taken directly from the Bible, Judas had little to no choice in his actions--though, I wonder if the Christian God drew straws to see who of the disciples would be made the scapegoat. It could just as easily been the householder where the last supper took place.

There is no way to tell, as none of us know the intentions of Judas' heart. That is between him and the Lord.

Jesus said of Judas:"It would be better for him if he had never been born". (Not hero material).
