I'm planning to run a 5k and I'm wondering about how I should train. Specifically, I'm not a runner and I've been training on a treadmill. I'm wondering whether running outside is going to be a shock to me. Do I need to spend some time running outside? There's just so much snow and it's cold outside :(. It's for charity, so I don't care about my time so much, but I do care about not being in pain while running. It's in about a month.

Treadmill running is good as long as you're running with at least a 3 to 4% incline, and keeping up a good heart rate. Running outside is definitely different, but I'm sure you can get some outside sessions in sometime within the next month. Good luck!

Well, since a 5k is a little over 3 miles, it's definitely necessary to train. I have to tell you, practicing outside is way better than on a treadmill. I run at my school almost every week, and when I first started there, I trained either not at all or on a treadmill, and I did not do very well. Then I started running outside nearly every day and now I do a lot better!

So start running a little bit every day, and work up to 3 miles. But don't skip a day, because then you'll make it a habit to skip.
