My daughter loves music, but I am not sure what to let her listen to. I think she is still a little young for even the cleaned up versions of pop songs that you see on tv, but what else is there?

Have times changed! When I was 7, I still listened to nursery rhyme records and those Peter Pan Storytime records that had Tinkerbell ringing her little bell when it was time to turn the page. I didn't start listening to the radio till about age 9, but that isn't to say that I wasn't aware of popular music, because my dad's record collection was always on constant rotation of Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Cat Stevens, Dan Fogelberg, etc. I just chose to listen to my kiddie records, when given the choice.

My 8 year old daughter just started listening to music in the last year. She has a few what I would call "mainstream" CDs, but I do think some of the material is a little old for her. High School Musical Soundtrack, Drake Bell, Hannah Montana, and a couple of Kidz Bop CDs. But I wouldn't mind if she listened to stuff I listened to when I was her age -- just to keep her young for a little while longer.

Our kids have grown up on Christian rock and pop music. They also have tons of Christian kids CD's. There's too much junk on the radio anymore. I listen to the music I grew up with (80/90's), and the words astound me!! I never paid attention to what the song was actually saying back then!
Hannah Montana, Drake Bell and other Disney artists are also a fairly clean bet. Try to expose your child to many different things, just be responsible and pick out something clean for them. They can't choose wisely and that's your job. Responsible parents----they are a dime a dozen! Good luck!!! =)

All that stuff from the Disney Channel is safe, EXCEPT FOR ALLY & AJ. I do not allow them in my home. But Hannah Montana is good, Hillary Duff, High School Musical, the Disney Radio bands/artists/CD's are generally all safe choices.

You are right to be concerned. Aside from monitoring the radio when we're in the car together, in her room she's allowed to listen to all of the above type of music, and most country music. She loves Keith Urban and Rascall Flats right now. Rascall Flats is good (safe) for kids in my opinion. Keith Urban is mostly okay, not all songs.

My 7 yr old daughter loves to listen to music so I make her mixed cd's. That way I can control what she listens to. Her most recent cd has on it: Rich Girl - Gwen Stefani, Beautiful - Christina, Burnin' Love - Elvis, Everybody Hurts - REM, London Calling - The Clash, and a really mixed bunch of stuff Flock of Seagulls, Frank Sinatra, The Offspring, bollywood dance music, etc. Choose what you think is good and expose her to a wide variety of musical styles. Who knows, she may grow up liking opera and country and western.
Just because she is young doesn't mean she has to listen to sappy, mediocre crap.

Well, the main thing is to keep her away from violent music, with cussing and such in it. Have you ever tried a Kidz Bop CD? They have the most popular music, but instead of the original version, they have kids singing it instead and they change some of the language so it is more appropriate.

Try tuning into musicians like John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, and Dan Fogelberg. I grew up listening to that set because my parents played them all the time, and I still love them. While Harry makes the occasional sex/drug reference, your daughter would most likely not even catch it, though I guarantee she'd get a kick out of "30,000 Pounds of Bananas".

Don't rule out jazz or classical, either. It may not be the most popular option, but I really liked those, too. And, since almost all of that is instrumental, you wouldn't even have to worry about objectional lyrics or suggestive music videos.

My 8 year old listens to Hillary Duff a lot. I think she's a good, clean, fresh alternative to Britney, & Christina and others like that. She can be a good role model, and her songs aren't bad either.
