If the litter never had been register , no you can't. I tell so many people never ever by a puppy without the litter registration being in your hands. If you ask the owners if their dog was AKC Register and they said yes you might be able to talk to AKC and see where you stand. I really don't think you would get anywhere with out the AKC number of the dogs. But it would be worth a try. You can also try and get your money back from the breeders tell them you don't want the dog without the litter papers. You be surprise just how many breeders cough up the papers when you say that. Once again never I mean never buy a puppy that you don't get the papers when you buy the puppy. There is no excuse for them not to have the litter papers in time of sale of puppy..AKC is very good about getting the papers to breeders in time.

The reason why they did not give you the papers was to prevent you from registering the dog. A breeder has every right to do this, it is their way of keeping their breeding program pure. However, if you have spayed or neutered your dog, I'd contact them again and ask for the papers. With your dog "fixed" their breeding program would not be in jeoardy.

Unless you can get the papers from the breeders, the only thing you can do is get a limite registration (ILP) from AKC. This is for obvious pure-bred, altered (spayed or neutered) dogs that don't have papers.

I got an ILP for my rescued Golden Retriever, Bob, so we can compete in AKC sanctioned Agility, Obedience and Rally events.
