Purple Heart ? He was awarded the Purple Heart, The ribbon/medals for Iwo Jima, The Pacific Campaign, and several others. But I don't think he ever collected them.

He has passed away. Without digging out his records; I believe he was a Devil Dog. I do know, I never SAW any of these while growing up. So don't know if he ever collected them. As his only child, I would like to get them, if possible.
Thatnks for the info P Paller !

Your father should have a copy of his DD-214, which will list receipt of all awards when he left the service. You can also request a copy of your father's military records (you don't mention that he's deceased so I'm listing both options here).

Deceased - Use this web page to submit request: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html

Not Deceased - Submit SF-180 to the following address:

Navy Personnel Command
Liaison Office Room 5409
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

Best of luck with your research!

Call the Marine Corps office in the city where you live and ask if they can give you an address of where you can write to get information on whether your dad collected his campaign medals, ribbons, Purple Heart, etc.

UPDATE: After contacting the Records Department in St Louis; I got just a few pieces of his paper records, but not what I needed as his papers were in the section that burnt in a massive fire back in the 1970s . Even what I did get had a few crispy and black edges. As his only child it would have been nice to get what was owed to him, but at least I know he did his service. Thx.

You can also go to this website (http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/standard-form-180.html) . This has specific instructions on procedures for obtaining information regarding deceased veterans. As next of kin you have the right to obtain certain information. Make sure you are on a computer that has a printer so you can print out the final form and mail it in. You must mail it within 20 days of submitting your request.

This sounds like a good question for your Congressman. They have people on their staff who know how to cut through bureaucracy and can find answers much faster than you would by placing a cold call to the veterans' affairs department.

Look under the website Marines.com. I believe they have a veterans section under there. At least they can give you a contact number.
