depends on what rate you are looking for. do not go to 82nd ave as someone suggested, its a horrible place (very cheap, dirty, not the greatest part of town.. really!). Doubletree hotel( 503-281-6111) is a nice place to stay, right on the max line, will get you to and from airport, to downtown etc. if you book through priceline (will be cheap), but as a former employee i do not recommend to do so unless you are really looking to save money, and room will only be used to sleep in. Priceline customers get the smallest rooms, if no other rooms are availbale they will stick you in a smoking room, even though you asked for a nonsmoking. because you are paying such a discounted rate, priceline doesn't guarantee roomtype/smoke or nonsmoke, it just guarantees a place to sleep. it is in priceline disclaimer. any hotel will do that to you.
outside of portland metro area, try hilton garden inn portland/beaverton (503-439-1717), nice rooms, not too expensive( now i think at 79, might be more in may), they have a shuttle that will take you to the max so you can go in to portland, verify the hours to make sure they will be able to come back and pick you up from the max stop. pool, hot tub, work out room, business center, restaurant/bar on property. also am a former employee, i do recomend the hotel.
in clackamas area, i heard nice things about monarch hotel, or embassy suites by airport.
good luck!!

According to the information on Orbitz, there are hotels for as low as $35.00 in Portland, OR. Prices might go up in May. Most of the hotels or motels are located close to Max (city train) or bus lines therefore it would make your traveling easy.
Depending what is your purpose for traveling you might chose to stay close to Airport or Convention Center. Hotel prices are cheaper there and commute to downtown is quite fast and convenient.

Econolodge has two properties that are close to MAX stations, one on Broadway across from the Rose Garden arena east of downtown and the other out by the airport at I-205 and Sandy Boulevard. There are also a lot of "ma 'n' pa" motels along Interstate Avenue with easy access to the MAX yellow line.

There are some older motels close to downtown for $25.00 a night...nothing fancy but clean...sorry don't remember the names...also try looking up a hostel. They are only about $15.00 a nite...just depends on how much privacy you need.
