Basically what make a bad word a bad word?

I think if people use it badly it makes it bad. For instance, I used to think special was a good word but if someone says, "What you just said was 'special'." then it's insulting. I think cuss words were just words until everyone who uses it insults someone else with it. Then again, words are just words, nothing less nothing more, and words don't have emotions but can bring them. Cuss words aren't exactly bad words unless you make them bad.

Thank u Funbunboo...finally someone else who has pondered this question!! I have often wondered what makes some words bad..and what makes some words not bad...but what I would really like to know is WHO MADE THAT DECISION??

most of the time its something that starts off ok but then people turn it into something bad, or make a big deal about it.
like gay....etc
