For my birthday I want to get snakebites or just a single lip piercing, but I want some tips from people with experience in piercing first.

I have both, my tongue and lip pierced...

Both of the actual piercings were fine. Felt a pinch, whatever. It was the clamp that hurt the most. Not really a big deal, though. With my lip it was gross because I could hear the crunch as my piercer put the needle through...

With my tongue, it hurt for a good two weeks after. The swelling and such was most of the pain. Eat ice and take some Advil and you should be ok. I don't really remember too much pain other than the swelling, though. It was 2 years ago now. I do remember it being difficult to eat at first. But nothing too bad.

With my lip, it looked like someone punched my right side of my bottom lip for about 2 days. After that, it was fine. I got that done on my 18th birthday. (December 13th, 2006.) So it's still a pretty vivid memory. It was rather annoying trying to figure out how to eat with it, though. I kept biting it. You get used to the piercing being there after a few days/weeks and you forget it's there.

Just keep up with aftercare and you should do fine.

I have had my lip and my tongue pierced. I still have my tongue pierced, but I took my lip piercing out, (for personal reason's not because of the piercing itself). The tongue piercing doesn't hurt in its self, it is just a little uncomfortable for a few days, a week at the most. But you must ensure you care for it properly, as with every piercing. I gave up smoking to get both my lip and tongue pierced (again that was a personal decision). With all piercings I have gotten I thoroughly researched the pro's and con's and what to expect. When I researched for my lip and my tongue I found that eating dairy products especially can cause the piercing to become inflamed. I didn't eat any dairy until I knew my tongue had healed thoroughly, and I had no problems. However a few of my friends ate a lot of dairy (ice cream, yoghurt ect) against my advice and had horrible troubles with their piercings, 2 of whom had to take them out as they were just as swollen a month after getting the piercing. My suggestion is to constantly have crushed ice in your mouth, not only will it bring down the swelling, but it can help if you do have pain.

In my research I found that along with not eating dairy, you should also cleanse your mouth after food with 1 part Listerine (or similar) and 2 Parts water, and as often as possible with warm salt water. This will stop food getting into the piercing and kill most bacteria. Because your tongue heals quite quickly if you follow all of the intructions given by your piercer, you should have a fast healing piercing that gives you no troubles.

I would also advise that with each piercing, once you are allowed to change the jewellery, change it to plastic or the dental approved jewellery so that the enamel is not stripped from your teeth. Also I think this goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, DON'T play with it, as fun as it may be to show off your new addition it really can mess with your tongue or lip and will leave an ugly scar when and if you decide to take it out.

Choose your piercer carefully as always and don't be afraid to ask others what they think.

Good Luck!

B

Honestly, it depends on the person getting the piercing and the person doing the piercing. I personally have my tongue pierced. I've had it for 5 years now. The initial piercing didn't hurt. It was the day after that my tongue was swollen and it ached, there really wasn't a pain and it wasn't nothing unbearable. I mostly sucked on ice cubes to help the swelling and then I ate soft food, my favorite was hot dogs, cause I cut them into tiny pieces and then used my fingers to push it to the side of my mouth and ate it that way. I know it sounds difficult, but I really wanted it done. I don't regret it. The only advice I have is....investigate the place where you are going to get the piercing done at. You don't want someone who doesn't know what they're doing cause then they'll mess up. This is something that could scar you emotionally and physically. I once got my nose pierced by a guy that I later found out wasn't licensed and he messed it up. I have a small scar on the side of my nose and I'm more leery about who I go to.

Hey There,
It all depends on your pain tolerance, personally I'm a BIG!!! WUSSIE!!! and it didnt hurt me at all, I mean it stung a little but no biggie. I got my tongue pierced when I turned 18 that was my birthday present to myself.
It was sore for a while after. I really forget how long it takes to heal but I know that it wasn't easy to eat. But I'm a blabber mouth so I talked the entire time, the person who pierced my tongue put the wrong barbell in my tongue instead of one big enough to allow for swelling so I had to get it replaced but that wasn't anything big either.
I kept my tongue right for 4 1/2 years. I had it while I was pregnant and after. The only reason I took it out was because my husbands grandparents had read in the newspaper that there was a disease that originated from tongue rings, that you couldn't know that you had it until you were diagnosed and it was from a secretion of fluid in your tongue, some people have it and others don't but if you do that is how you get it. i'm not sure on all the specs but I know that there isn't a cure for it and you can die from it.
It shows up simmilar to aids in your body. So I took mine out because my daughter is more important that a tongue ring. however i still miss it and look for it in my mouth now. I hope that it works out for you. If you get it done make sure you go to someone who knows what they are doing and won't mess you up ok. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Well, I have my tongue pierced and I'm going to tell you now, it hurts...no, not when they stick the needle or whatever in your tongue, after wards...Your tongue swells for a while, more than a week and you use ice to help the swelling..Eating is a luxury, trust me, I lost 10 pounds because I wasn't really able to eat anything..I think when people get their lips pierced it's almost the same way...I'm not for sure, but hey, don't let it stop you, I've had mine in for a while now....if you want it done, do it...:)

i've had my bottom lip pierced and i found it really hard to heal because it kept getting caught on my bottom teeth, and it also used to rub on them so i ended up taking it out. i also got my top lip done, you know the beauty spot, and that healed up heaps quicker, i guess cause it had nothing to catch on. if you want to do it, make sure the person is fully qualified, and make sure they give you a big enough bar to put in it when you first get it done. also remember if you don't like it, you will be left with a scar.. kinda makes me wish i didn't get mine done.. good luck.
