I always get a nice Federal refund but I have to pay state more and more each year. My husband and I both deduct 1 and file married. I know it might be better to claim 0, but why is my Federal refund so nice even with claiming 1, and I'm paying state so much?

Do you happen to live in CA like me? I am always in the same situation with state tax. Some states have their own version of the W4 form. CA has its own form, and if you read the instructions, it tells you that you will probably owe more tax at the end of the year if you use the same exemptions as Federal. If your state has its own form, fill it out with both claiming 0. If it doesn't, you can use the federal W4 and write across the top "FOR STATE WITHHOLDING ONLY". Hopefully this will solve your problem.
