Make sure you are using a "Level 3" color--a permanent color. (and not one that will wash out over several washes, also known as a semi-permanent color)

For the brands, I like the Clairol colors best--they don't dry my fine hair out as much as the Feria (L'Oreal) colors do. Garnier is also more gentle.

I liked the Ultress line of color (by Clariol) best, but it was discontinued about a year ago--it works best on my gray hair(holds onto the gray more than other brands do, fades slower than some others), and it is what I used when I went from dk brown to red, and back to dk brown.

Keep in mind that brown hair pulls red/orange as the first stage of lightening, and even w/the dk mahogany brown color I use, I still get a bit of fading to reddish brown sometimes. You may need to use the color twice to really cover the red.

If you go to Sally's Beauty Supply (you don't have to be a beautician to go there, like other beauty supply stores) you can buy the color & the "peroxide" (developer) seperately. I usually use 30 volume, but I was told that 40 volume will help the hair hold the color more. (Just ask any of the people that work there for help--they have a lot of knowledge to share!) (I also use the Clairol color line that I find there, but like to "experiment" w/different colors sometimes...)

I would also avoid any "warm" colors as they will have red/gold undertones--try the "ash" or "neutral" shades--anything w/a violet base will also keep the "brasiness" down.)

And if your hair is short, like mine is, you may be able to mix up only half or 1/3 of the color at a time. (just use equal parts of color & developer) I learned this trick to avoid using a $10 box of haircolor & putting over half of it down the drain. I either use an extra bottle saved from the previous box of haircolor to mix it in, or a small glass & a wood or plastic spoon. (I apply the color w/a small brush around my face, and w/my gloved fingers for the rest of the head...but I have been coloring my own hair for almost 15 yrs now...)

The link below will take you to the Sally Beauty supply store locator to help find the closest location for you! (And you can click on the link for the main pg from there, also.)

Pls feel free to contact me via email if I can be of any further help, also!

I dye my hair red !

It is a funny colour as it is hard to take in the first place but then it is hard to get rid of!!

I would go and see a really good hairdresser who can strip the colour out for you!

Good Luck

I have no experience in this field, but I have to ask, why change your hair colour in the first place?

Keep to your natural colour, and you will save a fortune.

I hope you get your problem sorted, but then, stay with the colour you were born with, and ignore the money making companies who want you to change.

Well, first u need 2 go 2 a hair stylest 4 immediate help with ur hair. Plz, don't try 2 do it on ur own, cuz u might only make it worse. Tell the stylest what u want done, and he/she will try their best 2 make it better.

I have the same problem, except i dyed my hair black,i can't get the black to go any lighter. The best thing to do is go to the hairdressers to see if they can dye it dark brown.Or get the colour to fade,i heard using head & shoulders shampoo regulary makes hair colour fade. Then once it's faded try and dye over it again.

Red can be quite difficult to remove. I always go to a salon to have my hair dyed. In my experience with red, a very good colorist will be able to help you to change your colour.

you could dye it darkish brown yet you want to pre pigmentate it first to placed the copper, bronze and pink tones in first. in case you do not do this it is going to pass eco-friendly. It acceptable to have this performed professionally for the acceptable effects.
