I am trying to get a health insurance policy with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of IL. I have had and HMO policy with them for about 3 years. My cobra policy with them is about to run out shortly as of March 1. I was in the process of trying to get another policy with them. I had the understanding that they would cover me completely since I had been covered with them for 3 years. Was I mistaken? Can they reject me just like anybody else? Do they not have to accept my medical pre -existing conditions? I thought they did since they had been covering them for this amount of time. I do not know anything about the law. Is there any place I could look to find out my rights in this matter? I have to know soon. I do not want to be without insurance.

After COBRA runs out your options are largely dictated by the Laws of Illinois for individual coverage. Most States do not require carriers to provide coverages for individuals or accept pre-existing conditions. Contact an independent benefits broker in your city to find out the laws in Illinois. By the way COBRA can extend beyond the 18 Months under certain conditions like if you are on public assistance.etc. Check this out with the broker also. Good Luck.

Most insurance companies would rather sell plans to small businesses instead of individuals - because individuals tend to default on payments.

In your case, they probably don't realize that they've been collecting money from you for the last three years - without fail. All they see is one person wanting to purchase an individual plan on their own - which means, IN GENERAL, they're going to get screwed on the premium payments.

Contact your state's insurance board for your rights in this matter specifically - they might tell you you have a case to fight the insurance on this.

I have found the source box to be a good resource for this type of insurance. There are a variety of ways to go about this so I suggest you research some of the companies for their offers.
