Instead of using a credit card could i use a debit?

I can't speak for 100% of them, but Hertz, Avis, National, Budget and most of the other majors, do NOT take debit cards.

Some do, some don't. I have NO credit cards, so I only rent from places that will take a debit card or cash deposit. You just need to look on the company website or call a branch or the reservation phone number to find out the exact policy....they're all different.

The ones I have used (Hertz, Avis) do not take debit cards. They told me it was because they cannot place a hold on the funds while the car is in your possession like they can with a credit card.

Some do, some don't. You'll need to check with the individual rental car companies as you make your reservation.

yes they do as long as it have a Visa or Mastercard logo I rent cars with my debit card

yes, but they will "pre authorize" your card for several hundred dollars as a deposit. check with them prior to renting to get the exact amount. we ran in to this one time & i think it was somewhere around $400...crazy...
