There's some good black bear hunting going on up in the BLue Ridge area in Northern GA. The game people estimate one bear per square mile of good habitat, so you have a good chance. I'm not a fan of hunting with a shotgun. I'd say take a 30-30 or a 30-06. And do take a buddy. Two reasons: 1 is back up, two is help getting the big guy out of the woods. I took out a black bear in ALeghany National forest and ended up dragging the lug 16 miles myself. Not fun. Also attracts other predators.

Sorry, I don't know your states rules. But here is some general info.

Most bear hunting is done by using bait, usually placed in a 30 or 55 gallon drums. You need start baiting the area a couple weeks in advance, so the bears learn where to get a free lunch.

I would use a big bore rifle, something over 30 cal with good penetration, and also carry a magnum revolver. Go for the heart/lung shot, never aim at the head, its just to thick.

Remember that a bear can out run, and out climb you, so Never go by yourself. You need someone to back you up in case you make a bad shot and the bear gets upset. This applies even more if you are using black powder, the bear will run toward your smoke, and you wont stand a chance without backup.

Black bear are less likely to come after you in these situations, but your larger bears are far more dangerous. But remember a black bear still has the strength and speed to break your neck with one blow.

Contact your local conservation/game & Fish dept to get all the rules and regs for your state, you may be able to get this online.

I'm not familiar with hunting in the great State of Georgia, but bears can take a lot to put down. Like the man above said (use a .10 gauge), don't take any chances. For a first time bear hunt you might consider a slug gun, like a .12 gauge pump. At least a .30-06 in rifle caliber with heavy bullets. People have taken a lot of Black bear with the old .30-30, but I'd opt for at least the new .338 Federal. Consider a side arm for backup. The .44 Mag. comes to mind.

Best.

here's a short answer, bait as far in advance as you can. I bow hunt only, so Matthews bow works great. I have taken 2 Canadian black bears this way. Good luck! Sammer is full of shi*! There is hardly a place in the continential U.S. that you would would have to drag a bear 16 miles! I shot two bears 20 yards of the road in cananda! If I had to walk 16 miles to my stand, I think I would find a closer spot!

Get the hunting regulations handout, usually where you buy the hunting license. In the regs you will find the firearms that are allowed. You may be able to download the hunting regulations. Call the number in that pamphlet for clarification, if you have any questions.
