I'm looking into buying one, fairly cheap. However i need to know two things, how safe are they? and How reliable were they?(granted reliability will depend alot on how the owner treated it). I have no idea about the car because it's older then I am.

try forums.maxima.org You can find lots of info on any year maxima there.

For nissan/datsun enthusiasts, the maxima is a sweet car. The only thing better is the Z (the older ones!). You will find tons of enthusiasts online and in your are with car clubs, and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who will give any datsun a bad rap. Good choice! It does depend on how the owner treated it, but with 4 datsuns I owned, I never had any problems with any of them, and some of them were pretty rough! You'll get your money's worth. Good luck!

My sister had a 1984 wagon that she sold with 206,000 on it and it ran great. The last year she had it she spent a few hundred on some cooling system repairs, but the Z-based straight six is indestructible.

Safety-wise it has no airbag or ABD, but it's reasonably safe for its age. Make sure te tranny shifts okay, because that will cost you if it goes.

Great car, and damn near bulletproof! Of course, it's old, and will require some maintenance, but it's a great vehicle. There's a complete writeup about the old Maximas at www.MaximaClub.org
