Well , having a 5 and a 3 yr old and a 10month old at home, this is what works for me. Colouring pages with their favourite characters- from the web. Interactive books, paints, home made play dough, any craft that involves glue and kid scissors, puzzles and of course time with mom. Good luck

Ussually when they get antzy I find that if I spend even 10 min playing with them, it helps alot afterwards. They act out when they feel like they need attention.
Also, give it some plastic bowls, pots, spoons etc and show him/her how to drum. Put on some classical music and let em go nuts.
If you want the kid quiet... give them a video and some animal toys to act out the show @ the same time... Dry cerial like kix are fun for kids to eat and not horrible for them.

This is a trick I learned from Parenting magazine, hope they don't mind me borrowing it. Take something that the child likes and let them play with it or have it, but only if they sit and play with it or eat it or whatever. Bribing them with a healthy snack or a favorite toy might help.

Tell the child to pretend he/she is glued to the floor. Or you could also try a coloring book. Those Crayola color wonder markers are a parent's dream come true!

Duct tape.
LOL, sorry couldn't resist. My son earned the name "perpetual motion" as soon as he learned to walk... didn't stop till he dropped!
Have you tried crayons/paper? Activities - blocks, legos?
Hang in there!
