Brief timeline of Australia-
50,000BC Aboriginals first arrivied.
Pre 1788 Aboriginals lived peacefully with the land.
1770 Captain Cook landed in sydney and raised the English flag to claim as England territory.
1788 Settlement began with the first fleet. Aboriginals were killed or pushed into the far outback. During this time the French were trying to claim Australia as their's.
1901 Australia became a federation. Sir Edmund Barton is the first prime minister of Australia.
1999 Australians voted on becoming a republic but it was not successful.
So we have been our own country for 106 years but are still a Monarchy which means we are still attatched to the Queen.

The various colonies became a Federation of States when the Commonwealth of Australia was created on January 1 1901.
