My cat, Noel, is very cautious to strangers and when someone comes over to my house, she hides for the duration of their stay. How can I change this?

I don't know if you can. I have a twelve year old cat whom very few people have ever seen (I got him as a kitten). He always takes to cover when anyone comes to the house - even my son who is here quite often and friends who come to visit. Mincho had to go to the vet yesterday for weighing and he tried desperately to get himself under the towel in his carrier to hide.

So I think it is just some cat's nature to be that way. Mincho is very loving with me and naps under the coffee table during the day. When the sun goes down he knows he won't have to deal with "strangers" and moves around all over the house and stays next to me on the couch when I am watching TV.

You can't make a cat do anything it doesn't want to do. Cats exist in their own world and will only make time for others if it suits them.

I'm a dog person myself and love their innocence and laid-back silly nature. But I do have 2 cats, or more appropriately the 2 cats have me. They are here every day during the winter and will actually jump up on the couch with me and seek attention. During the summer they may not appear for a week and just stroll on by when they're hungry or tired of feasting on birds or rodents.

Cats are what they are.

Oh, if they have names, I don't remember what they are. I refer to them as gray cat, and white cat. White cat is an old anti-social gimp (like me) and need help to get up on the counter, and the gray cat is psycho. He starts whacking at invisible stuff in the air. But once or twice a week he'll jump on the couch with me and expect his back to be scratched.

The best way to make a cat outgoing is to have lots of friends over when the cat is still a young kitten and even that's not 100%. Some cats are aloof by nature and take time to warm up to people.

There is absolutely no way you can make a cat warm up to a stranger especially if she/he is not a cat person. I've been a cat person all my life and I'm 61. Kittys know who will accept them and who won't. If I came over to your house, Noel would be on my lap in nothing flat, guaranteed.

You know, it is actually good for a cat to be leery of strangers - means they'll never get cat-napped or picked up by some evil teenager who'll torture them!!! I trained my cats to run away and hide from strangers. Anyway, some cats are naturally shy and timid and if your cat is like that, it will be next to impossible to change her. And you shouldn't.

Lol you really can't but maybe you could give her more attention and don't hold her against her will and she possibly will warm up. If not then maybe she's just not used to a lot of peple she's never seen before. Good luck, =]
