A blood alcohol level for .08% means it is not legal for you to drive a car or boat. It is the level that is considered legally intoxicated.
Your friend probably did not understand the reading I think he meant 0.25% For most people this is very drunk and may cause unconsciousness, not a coma and is not a life threatening level. He would most certainly be dead with a level of 2.5%. A fatal blood alcohol level is over 0.40%

If your friend survived a BAC of 2.5, he's either got serious alcohol problems, was very lucky, or misinterpreted a number somewhere. A blood alcohol level of 0.35 is often lethal; at 0.40, 50% of people will be dead. If he is a heavy drinker, however, these numbers could be doubled (such that he could survive a level of 0.7 or 0.8, which would be lethal for the overwhelming majority of people). Perhaps he meant 0.25, which would imply severe intoxication but not death in most cases.

Your friends numbers and symptoms make sense - a blood alcohol content of 4% is fatal about half the time. A reading of 2.5 is high enough to kill some people, and a person would definitely pass or become comatose at this level.

If he got out of the coma, he is very lucky. A 2.5 Blood Alcohol level is illegal to have. He could have died, yes.
