If you have tried eye lubricant (maybe you have dry eye) without success, then you should see your doc who will put some dye in it and turn out the lights. The dye glows in the dark and would reveal any scratches that you could not see with the naked eye. You may also have pink-eye (any discharge?). Also, maybe you have allergies. Try some Benadryl, if you are not allergic to it. Try leaving a hot towel over your eyes...I find that this helps sometimes.
It can also be irritated with you rubbing it- does the pink part inside your eye look swollen (this is the indicator for this)?

Eyes may become red when foreign particles like dust and sand enter the eye or when you cry. Avoid touching and rubbing the eye. A moist warm compress placed on the affected eye for 5 minutes reduces the discomfort caused. More information and remedies at http://eye-care.in/redeyes.html

you probably have pink eye or conjuctivits, you should call you dr.'s office for some drops. you have to use them for 5-7 days. be very careful with pink eye it is VERY contagious, if you have it in one eye, you will probably get it in the other. you have to through out all of your eye make-up and you won't be able to wear your contacts (if you have them) until it clears.

It may be allergies. Visine or Clear Eyes is good for that.

Go to a doctor, and have it checked. You could also have allergies.
