yes. it is the same thing. acp just means autoloading colt pistol. if it was 45 long colt that would be very different. i worked in a high volume gun shop for 3 years and have owned hundreds of firearms personally. as well as i have reloaded for over 10 years. i assume you are probably talking about a 1911 style colt pistol or a copy. i have owned many. and they all work fine. but just to answer youre question .45 auto and .45 acp is the same round. if you need any further advice on loading or specs just instant message or email me. i have loading specs for almost every caliber ever produced.

You can shoot 45 ACP in a weapon designed for 45 ACP.
“BUT” there are 3 different type of 45 auto ammo.
You have the,
45 ACP the most popular of rounds.
45 Auto Rim it’s still around in limited quantities.
45 GAP a all new round made by Glock, for that is shorter then the standard 45 ACP and can not be shot in a 45 ACP.
The ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol, where as the GAP stands for Glock Automatic Pistol.

None of these ammo will inter change, you must shoot only the ammo designed for your weapon.

So in short if the ammo don’t match what the weapon was designed to shoot don’t shoot it.
For there are 3 different types of 45 Auto ammo that will not inter change.

Yes you can. ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol. It's the exact same thing. You cannot use .45 auto RIM in a .45 ACP however.
The .45ACP is a rimless round.

.45 ACP means .45 Automatic Colt Pistol, so .45 auto should be the fodder of choice, Beware of .45 Auto Rim as it is for the revolvers that were chambered for the.45 auto round that did not have the half moon clips.

The .45ACP will shoot .45ACP ammo only. This ammo is designated ACP for Automatic-Colt-Pistol; there is a .45 auto-rim that cannot be shot out of an ACP pistols because it is semi-rimmed and intended to be shot out of .45ACP revolvers without moon-clips. The .45ACP ammo is 'rimless.'

Recently Clock came out with their very own .45GAP, a slightly shorter version of the .45ACP. The .45 Glock-Action-Pistol is not interchangeable with the .45ACP.

How to tell the differences: 1. By reading the head stamping on the cartridge; 2. By feeling the base of the cartridge to make sure it is rimless (your forefinger & thumb will slide straight down a rimless cartridge); 3. By seeing if the cartridge is visibily shorter than a .45ACP.

Good luck.
