I love my Rough-Coated collie because he has such a good temper and would never harm a soul. He's very playful, even at eight, and is also the focus of the crowd at the vet's office XD. I never worry because he's very protective and barks at anyone he doesn't know that comes to the door. He's also the funniest thing I've ever seen sometimes. He will run into the room to make sure you're ok if you sneeze XD. The only thing that's not so good about him is his fur. He doesn't shed as much as you'd expect but you have to brush a lot to keep mats away. He's really warm in the winter though and soft to hug. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for a good friend who has enough time to spend with him and enough room so that he can move. I originally got him because I loved Lassie as a kid but I think I will continue to look for collies because of this one.
And now I'll be the good dog expert: Make sure you buy a dog that's right for your lifestyle. If you live in an apartment, a large dog is not for you. That makes the place like a zoo and isn't fair for the dog. If you pick a high-energy breed like a dalmatian or a border collie, make sure you can spend time wearing that energy out. Hundreds of dogs are abandoned or 'sent back' because the owner can't take care of their needs. Ask a local vet about what dog is right for you.

I agree that you need to seriously consider your lifestyle when choosing a breed;are you at school or work and where will the dog be then;in yard or house? How much time EVERY DAY will you be able to give to this Best Friend cause they need more than food and shelter-they need interaction, attention and your heart! I have several dogs.1.Oakley is a border collie-heeler cross, very attentive and active and a real people -pleaser. 2.Hoppie is a heeler-corgie cross( BIG dog on short legs!) a bit more stubborn but after 3 years we have a close bond now. Both require a lot of time and exercise. And a job to do...even if its just being a Frisbee dog in the park! 3.Sadie is a little tiny Chihuahua long-hair and a real cuddler. She is just like having a small child;she goes EVERYwhere with me and needs even more exercise than her "big brothers". Each is differant. I highly recommend a "rescue " from a shelter-may not be purebred but will be purely grateful to be your forever best friend, Good Luck!

The best dogs for me have always come from the local animal shelter. I've never had a purebreed, always some type of mix. Personalities are highly variable, even within a breed.... I've known incredibly sweet rottweilers and rather mean labs.
Go to the animal shelter, they'll let you interact with the dogs to pick who you want to take home. Its easy to find the dog that clicks with you in that time. No only will you have found a great friend, but you'll have saved a life.

I have 5 dogs currently. I prefer the herding breeds. I currently have 2 pembrooke welsh corgis, 1 yorkshire terrier, and a lab mix. The kind of dog that is right for you really depends on lots of factors. Are you active, do you have a big house with a yard, do you have a small apartment, do you have lots of time to spend with the dog? All of these things play a part in your choice of breed. I don't currently have a dog but in a few months I will have a Dalmatian puppy. I have owned one before and I can honestly tell you they are definitely one of the best breeds of dogs in the world! As long as you can tend to his exercise needs (an hour of walking each day + a bit of off lead running + play time) and you are willing to get him on a special Dalmatian diet, I would recommend the breed to anybody. They are excellent with children, other dogs and non-canine pets. They love to be with the family but get very destructive when bored or lonely.

I think that those people who love dogs, often prefer a
particular breed. Some people like small dogs and some
prefer large dogs.
For me, I like alot of different breeds, but I live in a condo and I
wanted a small dog, also a dog who I wouldn't have to worry
about as far as biting goes.
I bought a maltese dog and I actually have several now.
They are lap dogs, they just want to be where ever I am, and
they don't bite. They eat very little and are convient to take
anywhere with me, plus if I have to go away and need someone
to take care of my pets, I can find some one because I think
my small dogs are less threatening to people.
I guess it all depends on what kind of dog you have in mind.
Maltese are also very playful.

I have a Lab that I got from the dog catcher. He was only a puppy and was very smart from the first day. I said sit when he was behind the fence, and he sat right down. Also look for a dog that will look at you, and pay attention to you. If it's distracted easily, get something else. Also get a book on how to train it first, there's a lot of work having a dog, they're not a toy. If you take care of it right, it will love you forever. I've known dogs that have lied on peoples graves and died there because they loved them so much.

I have 2 dogs and my friend has 2. I have 1 English Bull dog named Butch and a lab mixed with a poodle and a golden retriever named Barkly. We usually call his type of breed a labrodoodle. LOL. The lab is a golden color and the puppy Bull dog is a brown with black spots. My friend has 2 Beagles that are still puppies. Their names are Dixie and General. Their colors are brown, black, and white. All of them are so cute.I would recomend the Bull dog or a Beagle but make sure it is a puppy so u can train it.But that is if u like HYPER dogs.
Good luck

I have a female St.Bernard (dry mouth). I would not suggest a St. for your first pet, or if you live in an apt. I have bred Labs, they are great overall dogs and easy to train, they don't shed alot either. Poodles, Schnauzers, they have fur instead of hair, so they don't shed at all. You should go online and check out the American Kennel Club, they have photos and descriptions of all kinds of breeds and what their particular needs are. It is important to get a dog that matches your personality.

I have a rottweiler/shar-pei mix and I have him because I rescued him and I could'nt say no. But in the past I have had what I must say is one of the best breeds, an Australian Shepherd. They are athletic, but also very intelligent and extremely aware of people and their emotions. Very awesome dogs, if you have time to spend with a dog I would recommend an Australian Shepherd.
